Festival style always includes a little dash of “dress up” – the costume piece you may feel a bit self-conscious about wearing on the street. For nails it’s the same. You might not wear neon pink to work, but it definitely works for dancing around a field.’ Top three colours for summer? ‘Banana yellow, tropical green and pinky orange reflect my favourite S/S ’11 shows – Prada, Missoni and Jil Sander.’ Top three designs? ‘Banana print, bold stripes and zig-zags.’ How can you make nails extra durable for festivals? ‘Let someone else pitch the tent.’ ROCKIN’ HAIR Nick Irwin, European creative director at TIGI, explains what these looks are all about… Day one... ‘Make use of the blow dryer before you leave. Wear your freshly washed hair in tousled curls for a classic festival look.’ Day two... ‘After an all-nighter, gloss is wearing away so add a headband and wrap the bottom of the hair over it. Secure underneath the band for a casual, easy up-do.’ Day three... ‘Grease has started to set in, but don’t hide it, embrace it. Go androgynous – pile on your boyfriend’s wax and slick back.’ FESTIVAL FOUR 3 1 2 BE CREATIVE Line eyes and lips or decorate your cheeks with shimmering ink – it won’t wash off in the rain either.
BEST COAST’S BEST BANDS Singer Bethany Cosentino picks her sounds of summertime… Best band to see live? ‘We opened for Weezer in L.A. and Rivers [Cuomo, singer] asked me to come on stage and sing. I was nervous, but it was amazing.’ Best band to be on tour with? ‘We took a band out on tour last year called Cults, and they played Coachella this year. They’re really sweet, indie, pop music.’ Best band to listen to on the tour bus? ‘I’m a huge fan of ELO and Fleetwood Mac. And a band called Those Darlins from Nashville, they’re really fun.’ Best band who’s a fan of yours? ‘She’s not in a band, but Drew Barrymore is a fan of Best Coast. She came to one of our shows and she’s the sweetest person. And Dixie Chicks tweeted me yesterday, which made my mum proud!’ Best feel-good band? ‘The Beatles. They were a band that both my parents were fans of. The songs have such a nostalgic place in my heart.’ K I WARPAINT’S FESTIVAL GUIDE Which festivals would bassist Jenny Lee Lindberg go to herself? The best festivals to forget yourself? ‘Laneway in Australia and Lollapalooza in Illinois.’ The best-looking festival? ‘Laneway. Australians are gorgeous and a great crowd too.’ The best festival for seeing the sunset? ‘I have a ball at Coachella during magic hour. They sure know how to pick the appropriate music to play at that time.’ The best stage at any festival? ‘I prefer the tents and more intimate stages.’ The most chilled-out festival? ‘All festivals for the most part are chilled. That’s the point. Everyone is there to participate in fun.’ The best festival band? ‘Yeasayer, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and !!! is a fun one. Nosaj Thing at Coachella was incredible.’ The best festival you’ve played? ‘We had the biggest crowd at Coachella – we were thrilled.’ Best festival memory? ‘All the memories are wonderful. We’ve toured with a lot of the same bands, so we made friends, and still hang with them all over the world – good times, good people!’
